Last week we told you about our idea to film on the border for our upcoming music video American Girl (Niña Americana).
Success! We found the perfect spot to film in Nogales, AZ alongside the border line. As we initially entered the dirt road that rides alongside the border fence, it was pretty evident that it was heavily watched by agents. We hadn’t even gotten a minute into the trail when we already spotted a border patrol truck watching us from the top of a hill. We thought it best to pull over and explain to the officer what our intentions were to which the agent said “I don’t have a problem with you guys filming there as long as you don’t do anything illegal, It’s a free country."
I’m glad we talked to him. I can only imagine how sketchy it must have looked when nine, 20 sum year olds began unloading cases and bags out of a 16 passenger van so close to the fence. The agents weren’t that careless either, we noticed that a few of them were watching us from a distance probably making sure we didn’t do anything fishy.
We set up our gear, plugged a monitor into the power generator (thank you tio for letting us borrow that) and began to film by playback. The weather couldn’t have been any better either. It was slightly cloudy at first but the the sun came out as soon as we began to film. We ran the song a few times using different angles and getting close ups of all the members. We even attracted a crowd of horses who stopped by to show their support. One particular looking individual walked right up to us and was no stranger to the camera; what a jackass!
After we had the necessary shots in that location we decided to cross into Mexico by foot and film around the downtown area. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend going. There is so much to see and amazing tacos to be eaten.
Next week we will be filming in Tucson accompanied by our friend Angel Duran from Mariachi Sol Azteca. So tune in next week to see the highlights!
